I'm going to be honest; I wasn't a big fan of this story when it was in the contest. Kyon's point of view just didn't work for me because it just seemed... so overdone.
Then of course I saw the series and everything made sense.
Kyon is definitely spot on in this fic, 'alas' and all. And the gift at the end is much more satisfying now. I really like it now that I understand what he and Haruhi are all about. ^^ Well done!

Author's response:
It's good to have an opinion from someone who's seen the series, especially with regards to the effectiveness of Kyon's POV. It had me worried, because I don't usually touch first person perspective and I'd only seen the series through maybe five times. Usually, I get much more immersed so I'm sure I've a good feel for the characters, but I wanted to honour Dej's request that we try something totally new for the contest and the Haruhi idea just popped into my head. So I went for it. Glad it worked well in the eyes of someone who's (again) seen the show and whose writing I enjoy. Yay!

I thought that this was the sweetest story ever. It was very adorable. What I was most impressed with was, though I don't know the fandom, it didn't feel like it mattered. You told the story in a way that someone who doesn't know what you are talking about could catch on quite easily.
Great job.

Author's response:
I'm very glad to hear it! Most especially that you enjoyed the story, but also that it was accessible for someone who has yet to see "Suzumiya Haruhi." Despite its mega-hit status within the fan community, I wasn't sure if it had penetrated from the fansub watchers to the fanfic writers: which it apparently hasn't. So, again, it's excellent to know the story still presented uninformed readers with a good sense of the characters involved.
Thank you for the C&C!
PS: I very much recommend the show!
