FROM THE AUTHOR OF "THE PARANOIA GROOVE", "TALES OF THE DREAMWORLD" AND "1101" The little black cat drew near to the far end of the hall, where there stood a worn and weathered sculpture whose artist not even she could name. It was more ancient than ancient, and pieces were cracked or chipped off, and the details had been rubbed away by time and harsh worlds. All the identity the sculpture had left to cling to was the title of the piece: The Progenitor. The work bore a remarkable resemblance to a Sailor Soldier battling some great, terrible flood, her arms and legs ensnarled by tendrils and waves, the cold resolve on her face still standing out amidst the fading of other details. A tidal wave, the flood's core body, was leaning forward as if to devour her, and it had enormous eyes--a being who was without true form, yet still was. As the little black cat gazed upon it, she was filled with a lingering fear she could not fully explain. She turned away and looked upon the other soul inside the Hall of Antiquity. The little black cat bowed down on her front paws, and the gentle light radiating off the Queen glimmered against a golden, crescent moon-shaped marking on the cat's forehead. "Halcyon Queen," the cat spoke with reverence. The Queen of Lunaria stared at The Progenitor, her face solemn, her hands clasped behind her back. "It's beginning, isn't it, Luna?" she said. "After four hundred years of dormancy, the Sailor Soldiers have been chosen anew by their henshin." With great reluctance, Luna nodded her head. "The Sailor Soldiers have always been destined to appear in times of great crisis. A resurrection like this could only mean one thing: evil about to rise and threaten the Silver Millennium." EVERY STORY HAS A BEGINNING... "Serenity is Lunarian, and royal blood at that," Kunzite said. "There may be some mystical aspects about her we do not yet know. Lunaria is after all a matriarchy; it's the women who have the power and the rule here." Endymion shook his head. "It's not that, Kunzite. It's more than that. It's her smile." It was an answer Kunzite had not been expecting, and at first he did not fully believe he had heard it. "Her...smile?" Endymion nodded, and his own smile greatened at the memory alone. "The way she smiled, it...it was pure. A child's smile, trusting and warm. She never doubted me, or our intentions. She had no ulterior motives, no hidden agendas." He turned his head towards Kunzite. "It was like she just accepted me for what I was, good and bad, even though she had just met me. Like she's never seen the things that I have." Kunzite considered Endymion's words. "Do you believe in love at first sight, my prince?" "What sort of question is that?" "The sort of question that a person who's fallen in love at first sight tends to dodge when asked." Kunzite had to grin as Endymion's face went flush. EVERY CHARACTER HAS AN ORIGIN... It took her more than an hour of quiet searching, but Rei eventually found Jadeite. He was standing upon a wooden bridge that spanned a great outdoor canal. Further down the canal, the water emptied into a waterfall and a tranquil pool filled with Lunarian fish. Trees resembling wisteria rustled all around him. Rei struggled with the silence. Finally, as she decided to turn and walk away, he abruptly opened his mouth. "What are they saying about last night?" he asked her. Rei hesitated, unsure of what to tell him. He was expecting an answer. She gave it to him. "They're awed by the battle Endymion and his Generals fought last night. Earth is being viewed with newfound respect, and since the attackers were unmistakably Lunarian, many in the palace are having to re-examine their beliefs about how safe our own world is." Jadeite's expression did not change. "And what are they saying about me?" This time, Rei did not hesitate. "They're terrified of you," she stated. She sounded regretful. For that matter, Jadeite regretted it happening in the first place. "You shouldn't have seen that," he said quietly. Rei took a step onto the bridge, and drew closer to him. "What happened?" "I lost control," he answered. He watched the water. "It doesn't happen often, but when I go, it's a miracle I ever come back." Rei's expression changed. She understood. "You're a berserker," she said. EVERY EMPIRE HAS AN END... Beryl drew up next to a bed adorned with satin sheets and silk pillows, scarlet and black contrasting beautifully with each other. Next to the pillows was a silver tray filled with chocolates and fruit delicacies. Upon the bed slept her twins, dressed in fragile white gowns that revealed more than they hid. The eyes of the twins opened as they sensed her approach, and the two young women slid up off the covers as if they owned the wind. Beryl smiled as she sat down on the edge of the bed and caressed their faces. "What have my daughters dreamed?" she asked. "They know," Lapis said, almost giggling. "They are coming to us now, instead of us having to go to them." "We can start our games soon," Lazuli said. Her excitement showed in her eyes and her smile. Beryl sighed, and she absently twirled a lock of Lazuli's hair around her fingers. "So soon?" she drawled. "My, but they are quick. We have waited years and sacrificed much to bring our little Endymion to this point. The seal is finally weakening, and now all the necessary players have assembled together." She glanced over her shoulder at the door, and said more to herself, "I shall notify Spinel, and have him assemble his martyrs." "Do we get to watch the blood dance through the air?" Lapis asked. "Perhaps," Beryl said. "It all depends on your vantage point." Lazuli giggled. "Ooh, this will be such delicious fun...." HIS LORDSHIP CHAOS PRESENTS -ANGEL ELECTRIC- Kunzite traced his fingertips along Minako's cheek, and then combed them through long, golden hair. "Do you trust me then, Sailor Venus?" "Depends," Minako said. She then leaned closer to his ear and whispered, "If I invite you to my room afterwards, are you going to bring your sword to bed?" Kunzite was about to give her his answer, but his voice was silenced as the double doors leading into the undersea ballroom were pushed open. Spinel did not pause or pose in the doorway. He kept moving, stalking across the ballroom floor towards Endymion, his soldiers following behind him. Spinel's mere presence alone managed to silence the music, and cause the Lunarians to grow quiet. The air grew thick with malice, its purity poisoned by Spinel's vengeful gaze. Endymion felt it upon his back, and stopped dancing. He slowly tuned around, surprised in how calm he was considering what was about to happen. "Endymion?" Serenity asked him. Endymion gave her no answer; he stepped out and placed himself between her and Spinel. Serenity's eyes widened as Endymion grasped the hilt of his sword. His eyes went from blue to grey, and the warmth he had shown her moments ago was gone. Nephrite stiffened and, without excusing himself, walked away from Rei to stand by Endymion's side. Jadeite and Zoicite emerged from amidst the masked dancers to join their prince. Kunzite saw the change in movement, and stopped his dancing. His eyes looked straight ahead, to where Spinel and his men marched towards Endymion. "Kunzite, what's going on?" Minako asked. As gently as he could, Kunzite was pushing her away. His eyes never left the advancing soldiers. "Minako," he said quietly. "Gather the other Sailor Soldiers. You're about to go to war." THE SILVER MILLENNIUM FALLS SPRING 2005
