Psychosis by gotrice15278

She lay on the hard ground, looking up at the dark-red sky, the tangy metallic smell of blood hanging in the air. She wondered how she had come to be in this position, she kept trying to remember, but could not — how long had she been down? This much she did know; the battle still raged on and she was injured. She could not call out an order, for her trachea had collapsed; it did not matter much, she was not one for words anyway. It unnerved her, though, that she could not move.

Her mind reeled as she processed the sounds of the world around her. She heard groans and screams; the blasts of fire, clanging metal: grunts and explosions. Most especially, she heard the call of Sozin’s Comet. It was a siren’s song; it beckoned her. She wondered if it was the same song, her great-grandfather had heard.

If she could smile, she would have because she already knew the answer.

But this realization caused her to frown — or at least, mentally.

She could not answer its call, nor could she rise and claim her destiny...her inheritance. She is now the exact opposite of what she was-- weak and useless.

This notion brought on a coughing fit and she coughed up fresh blood that stayed in her throat. She knew — she could feel it, she was dying. She found it harder to breathe.

Closing her eyes, a vision of herself in crimson and gold embroidered robes and the Fire Lord’s crown perched upon her head played in her mind’s eye. Her face stoic, but her eyes bore the weight of disappointment. It hurt — cutting very deeply — never in her life had she ever seen that look directed toward her -- never, and now she was helpless. She could not rectify the situation, nor could she change the circumstance, and could not manipulate any of it.

Some snide part of her wondered if this was how her brother always felt. Oddly, that was enough to lessen the sting.

She heard a far away voice. It sounded like the Avatar’s Waterbender and her brother. They were trying to resurrect her. But no, she would have none of it. Would death be a welcoming lover? Surely, to live defeated and a failure was far worse? She had not risen so high to bow out so low. She was a princess, and regardless of her divine right, she had worked hard for her repute.

The soothing sensation of cool water around her neck sent a warm tingly sensation over her skin. Her eyes shot open as searing pain coursed throughout her body, a pain more intense than any she had suffered in the past from her lesser burns. Her mind was calculating now, a diversion to block it out.

No, she would not permit them to have this to hold over her. She had her pride after all. It was all or nothing. If she were not to be the Fire Lord, then she would damn her own soul to hell.

Gradually, as her body was repaired, she began breathing slowly. She heard the waterbender coo, saying something along the lines of, ‘it’s going to be okay.’ Her brother was the one holding her down. The air around her felt different, it felt safe and it bothered her. Never in her life had she felt that feeling...until now, but that was irrelevant.

She closed her eyes once more and a wicked smile graced her pouty lips.

She saw her father.

Saw her grandfather.

She saw Sozin -- then, nothing...
