Rebirth of Venus

Written for the .moon seasonable spring challenge

Several Miles beneath the Southern Portion of the African Plate

Circa early 21st Century

“So, Kunzite chose you for this assignment. Well I will have to make sure you’ve earned his trust Tsukino,” Minako said.

Usagi blanched and looked down, not wanting the older woman to see her tears as she flicked through the pages of her notes. The beautiful scientist intimidated her, the domineering attitude she thought had something to do with Minako's attraction to Dr. Kunzite Onoko. Usagi wasn't interested in this guy and couldn't convince Minako of this. She had tried, but it only made the vixen see Usagi as more of a threat and she was gob smacked.

She had not only Minako to deal with, but also that annoying baka, Chiba Mamoru. When her best friend Naru told her they were flying to South Africa, she was elated. But after hearing, their junior geology professor and not Suzanne Sakura sensei would lead the team she almost backed out altogether. But this was a chance of a lifetime, to find something new and exciting out about the world and be part of history. She agreed to sign on and glowered at the smug expression on Mamoru's face as she handed him the signed slip with her signature scrolled across the bottom.

The only thing Mamoru said was, "Hmm, Odango, I mean, Usagi...nice signature you have.”

“Thanks…” She groaned and the girls giggled. Makoto and Ami looked at each other and Umino and Yuuichirou winked, passing a few yen between them. Usagi rolled her eyes and huffed as she left the lecture theatre and walked at a brisk pace along the corridor towards the locker room.

After hanging up her lab coat and washing her hands, Beryl sidled up beside her and tapped her on the shoulder. “Sis?”

"Not now Beryl, I will have to ring around to find a baby sitter for you as you know I can't and won't give up this opportunity, so sis, I will ask Shingo to look after Jade, okay?" she said, as Beryl pouted.

Beryl was the black sheep of the Tsukino household. Five years older than Usagi, she had been a renegade. Boarding school in Kyoto and Vienna later, had failed to knock all the kinks out of her. For no sooner had she returned to Juuban Prefecture, she had taken up with Sano Umori, a singer with the Tokyo Ramblers, a group of session musicians that were destined for stardom. But she had fallen pregnant, and her lover wanted nothing to do with the baby girl, Jade. He was an asshole.

Not long after she had given birth, a group of female vocalists called The Amazon Quartet joined the group. Their lead singer, Lead Crow, a pretty raven-haired beauty was all the rage with the fans and the press. The fifth member of the vocal group represented another evolution of the troop. After that, they became an instant success. The band had fifteen full time members and others had come and gone, including notable giants in the industry like Ayumi Hamasaki, Bonnie Pink, to western stars like Phil Collins and others.

Day five of the subterranean expedition

“Ha! You’re the volcanologist, you tell me?” Usagi said, reaching the limits of her endurance concerning the arrogant blonde bombshell in a lab coat, her stocking clad legs crossed, her skirt riding high on her thighs for Kunzite’s benefit. Her sumptuous stream of gold tied into a tight bun at the nape of her neck, silver-rimmed glasses finishing off the ‘sexy scientist look’ as Minako called it. Yes, she was that vain.

“Simple, the Earth is far older than conventional geologists and tectonologists had ever thought possible, Tsukino!” Dr. Aino Minako said, her expression one of smug superiority.

Usagi wanted to wipe that smirk off that bitch’s face, but resisted the temptation to slap her. It took a lot to upset Usagi, but this woman could do it with ease.

Tsukino Usagi, only recently joining the Moho II Project along with her classmates: Makoto, Rei, Ami, Hotaru, Setsuna, and several others including Umino and the guys all found Dr. Aino insufferable. Usagi was almost certain that baka, Chiba Mamoru disliked Minako as much as she did. For anytime her name popped up in conversation, Mamoru’s face looked as if he’d just swallowed a lemon whole. Not pretty. She giggled under her breath.

Dr. Aino arched an eyebrow, and turned a little in her seat towards her supposed blonde rival, arms folded across her chest as if hoping for a retort. When none was forthcoming, Minako, a little irritated at Usagi’s giggling, went on the offensive; rambling on about her achievements to bolster her ego.

Usagi resisted the temptation to sigh and roll her eyes and kept her expression neutral.

“I had hypothesized that our understanding of the geological age and nature of our world was at best incomplete and at worst wrong. I was proven correct on my assumption,” she grinned, no doubt remembering the hoopla over the global press coverage and the notoriety she had won for herself for her Serpentine Hypothesis. “We’re going to find out so much more down here and you know the Earth’s crust every so often on the 11.0868 billion year clock within that range turns itself inside out every half a million years, give or take. I think that explains why there are so many legends about lost civilizations. Near 80% of the tectonic plates flip and the upheaval wipes out most of the surface world. Now this discovery proves it Tsukino so listen up. I need your assistance on this. But I don’t suffer fools so just remember that and you’ll be fine.”

“Neither do I…” Usagi said, deadpan.

Minako was taken aback and looked as if she'd been slapped. “Touché, you’re not the dumb blonde I thought you were, Tsukino. You know, you’re the first person who has challenged me in a while. I underestimated you. But I warn you, I’ll keep an eye on you!”

“Be my guest, Dr. Aino, I have worked to do and I think sparring with you in a ceaseless refrain would be rather pointless and detract from the bigger picture, don’t you?”

Minako winced again, and smiled and silence fell upon the lab within the huge burrowing drill that was like a small town that could bore its way through the Earth’s crust like a hot knife through butter.

Speculation was rife that the strange crystal spheres found at a depth of five kilometers beneath an abandoned diamond mine in South Africa were almost 250000 years old. But more astounding was the unprecedented discovery of a chamber with an artificial life support system that had yet to be explored. The interesting feature of the massive crystal façade they’d unearthed was the thirteen symbols of the zodiac, including Ophiuchus, and a series of sarcophagi bearing the symbols of the planets and their corresponding zodiac signs upon each.

Day 10

The Porteli Drill, so-named after its designer, with its Trynium drill-head punctured the massive chasm’s ceiling. But immediately reversed course. Probes had found an alternate route.

Soon, after their arrival through the solid rock face, everyone stood before the ring of upright crystal caskets.

“I feel awestruck by this place. Minako, look over there, a console of some kind, want to check it out?” Kunzite winked at his lover, leading the bane of Usagi’s existence away to make out no doubt.

“I think we can start filming, taking samples and measuring various types of radiation,” Rei suggested, grinning at Jadeite, who circled the firestone crystal cocoon. All were drawn to a specific sarcophagus and just before Rei and Jadeite reached out to touch the one dedicated to Mars, a scream was heard back at the drill.

“Shit man, look!” Motoki pulled the younger student away. The obsidian web started cracking and expanding from the spot in the granite wall Karasu had touched, blisters appearing on his hands and he was trembling.

The wall began to change, and a face, the most horrific thing Usagi had ever seen took shape.

“What the hell is that thing,” Mamoru said, putting a protective arm around Usagi’s shoulder.

The dark crystal face began to laugh, “Fools, I have waited a long time for revenge! Serenity, you will not defeat me. I will cut them down again and this time, no returning!” At that moment, two cats, one black and the other white with golden crescent moons on their brows, bounded into the chamber and stood in front of Minako. “No not you! Mauans alive?”

“Everyone, touch the cases!” Luna shouted as Artemis stayed by Minako and Luna bounded towards Usagi and Mamoru.

Then, what Usagi took to be dark matter that resembled lightning burst forth from the body of the hideous monster that had pulled itself free of the wall and rushed towards Minako. It was all so surreal. Usagi was stunned and everything was happening so fast she scarcely had time to process it all. The creature’s wings like those of a bat, her harpy-like visage and ankle-length black hair flying out behind her as she screeched like a banshee as she launched herself towards the frightened scientist.

Minako’s body had all of a sudden, after touching the Venusian sarcophagus burst into a ball of orange fire. When Usagi’s eyes adjusted to the light, a tall woman of great power and beauty in a metallic orange outfit, sexier than anything Usagi had seen the scientist wearing before raised her crystal weapon. A blinding beam issued forth from her fingertips and Metalia was thrown against the wall with a blood-curdling thud.

Kunzite, who by this time had also transformed into a Shitennou warrior, assumed a battle stance; his crystal blade aloft. “This time Metalia, you shall be destroyed!” Kunzite shouted as three other Shitennou appeared.

Minako looked like a Goddess: the short skirt, X-shaped bodice leaving little to the imagination, the cape, high heels adding a touch of majesty to her amazing aura. But for the silver elbow length gloves, her limbs were bare. She looked not only physically different, but her whole demeanor was altered.

“Metalia! You shall not ever harm these noble warriors again, I call upon you all, to awaken!” Minako, now somebody else it seemed cried out and they all responded without a moment’s hesitation. “I am Sailor Venus! Time to clean up the trash!”

The crystal cases glowed and silhouettes stepped out of each and merged with their hosts. The Senshi of old had transformed. Usagi had become the warrior Princess, Sailor Moon, each Senshi as striking and hot as Venus smiled as they looked over their attire and power wands. Mamoru had become Endymion, his Shitennou banding together to take on the wrathful Metalia.

“No! You cannot be! The Shitennou were destroyed long ago, what magic is this? What deception?”

“Moon Cosmic Power …vanquish!”

“Venus Rolling Heart Action!”

“Mars Fire Soul Javelin!”

“Pluto Dead Scream!”

“Thunder Clap Rage!”

Mercury Ice Storm Blast!”

Silence Glaive surprise!”

“Earth Shaking!”

“Deep Submerge!”

The creature burst into flames and its screams of terror and rage echoed throughout the chamber as it disintegrated.

Day 12

The crystal seals were broken and as memories were restored, a new era had begun.

“Minako, you know, I think we’re going to be good friends, especially since we have all our memories back,” Usagi said holding a purring Luna.

“Yeah, I was a pain in the ass, but I was glad you started getting a bit of backbite…”

“Backbone, Minako…backbone!”

“But Arti! You like hanging around my neck don’t you. Tell you what. I’ll get Luna to give you a back rub. You never know, she might even walk up and down on your back and-“

“Mina-“

“You are so cute when you blush, even for a cat!”

Artemis sighed and shook his head as his ears drooped at Minako’s response. “Such is the price for memory restoration. But I wouldn’t have it any other way!”

“Neither would I Artemis,” Luna purred, as everyone giggled.
