Dark & light, mysterious & innocent, tortured hero & saving heroine are contrasts are often paired together. That the dark, mysterious tortured one is female & the light, innocent, saving character is male is what makes this story different. Is falling in love something a professor can plan or does it happen in spite of what others attempt to arrange?
