Author's Comments:
The title character is based on my actual cousin, whose name is in fact Joe. There are two lines that are taken verbatim from stuff he has said. You'll know which two lines when you get to them.
This short story was written for my Introduction to Creative Writing class I just completed. Originally, it was an assignment where we all had to have the exact same first line, which was "It was only her silent affirmations that kept her from going completely insane." As you will see, that line is no longer in here. It got nixed along with a lot of other stuff in the revisions.
