Reviews on Son of the Shadows by Starsea

Review by Kihin Ranno 2007-08-11

See, told you I'd get to it eventually. :P

The Sirius characterization is spot on. Sometimes it's a bit difficult to harness his temper so that its evident how much of a danger he is to himself and other people, but I think you managed it. And Remus talking about the night in third year would definitely be the the thing to diffuse the situation.

I'm not sure if I agree with Remus exploding there, however. It seems to take a bit more than that to get him to that point. Yes, he's been carrying that with him and it's been upsetting him, and being around Harry even a little would exacerbate it, but I'm not sure if he would fly off the handle there. Sirius is egging him on, but Remus has been dealing with that for some time; he's used to not giving in to the impulse to lose it with him. Plus, in the face of Sirius yelling, throwing more yelling into the mess isn't as interesting as if Remus's voice got really tight and low as if he was strugging very, very hard not to give in to temptation and scream. The bitterness and anger would still be there, just not in the form of having a row. It's like in acting: it's more interesting to see someone struggling not to cry than to just see them crying.

It also felt a bit quick to me. Just jumping into the argument was jarring, and while that might be to show that this could have really happened at any time, I still sort of want to feel the tension leading up to this moment to go along with it. The ending felt sewn up a bit too nicely as well. It just all flew by me so fast that I didn't have much time to take it in, you know?

But yay for more Remus and Sirius fic. :D

Author's response:

After DH, I don't think Remus's explosion is as OOC as it might have been. However, I should have explained in the synopsis that this scene was originally meant to be part of a larger story about Sirius in OotP that never got developed because I read much better ones, but I really loved this scene and it was too long to be a vignette. So that's the reason for the quickness and the sudden resolution. But I'm glad that you liked Sirius's characterisation.
