She felt startled by his presence as she stood in the hall.
Petunia and Harry were left alone.
She caught a glimpse of his eyes…the eyes of her sister. The similarities in his stare made her figit slightly as she tried to stow away her handkerchief.
“Well- good-bye” she said hastily as she turned to leave. She thought she heard him say something, which caused her to turn to him again. She felt her stomach jolt as she looked towards his direction.
At face value, Harry stood for everything she had hated. He looked like the man who was responsible for putting her sister and , subsequently, her family in danger - James Potter. And he, as well as the trouble that had been brewing for them, came from that world that Petunia grew to despise so passionately. For if it weren’t for magic and their lot, her sister would be with her and she would still have all the comforts of her home.
A sudden rage surged within Petunia.
FREAKS! What makes you think you’re so special?
It’s your kind who’s bringing all this trouble!
I’m forced to leave my home because of you DEVIANTS!
She hated James and all that he stood for.
Magic left her to go to school alone without Lily. Magic killed her sister, leaving her to be the only Evans left in the family. Magic didn’t save Lily from meeting her untimely demise.
Magic destroyed her life.
Petunia never forgave James for not saving Lily. If he was the man that Lily had painted him to be , he would've protected her sister. Lily would still be alive if it weren’t for him.
As her rage began to peak, Harry’s eyes caught Petunia off guard. A little voice from inside her began to speak. It was a voice she had not heard since the last time she had seen Lily.
Please don’t go! Lily, please.
I’d take back everything if …if it could be the way it were.
You are my sister! I'll always love you! ... Always!
I’ve missed you so much!
Although Petunia only housed the boy, never really raised him, keeping Harry in her home was the closest thing to having Lily with her. And although she had never shown it (or admitted it), his eyes brought a small comfort to her since it allowed her to look at her sister once more.
If something were to happen to him, there would be no more Lily left.
The thought of her sister’s light possibly being extinguished from this life raised a lump in Petunia’s throat.
She took one final glimpse at Harry and left.
