Misunderstanding Pretty Boys

There was a time when Lily wasn't sure about James Potter. After all, he hung around with Black and Lupin and Pettigrew all the time. Especially Black. Black, the pretty boy. Black, who didn't take any interest in girls. Black, who was always by his side.

James obviously kept asking her out as a cover for his questionable sexuality. Lily wasn't going to let him use her as his straight alibi. She wasn't going to let him use her full stop. So she said no.

She said no again and again and again.

It really was amazing how he kept coming back for more. He must be a glutton for punishment. With the rumours she heard about Black's family, Lily wasn't surprised that he and James were joined at the hip. Not only was James secretly gay, he was also a masochist.

Why me? she thought.

When Black ran away and holed up at the Potter house, Lily knew it was only a matter of time before he and James formally declared their undying love to the masses (or at least the rest of Gryffindor).

Amazingly, this did not happen. She and James were chosen as Head Boy and Girl. James stopped pestering her. Black appeared to be stuck to Lupin's hip now.

None of it made sense.

So when James asked her again, Lily said yes. She had nothing to lose. She needed to find out exactly what was going on with these two. A fight? Another boy? Had they actually got sick of each other?

"So... you and Sirius," she said as they walked down to Hogsmeade (alone! without any of the other three around! this was unheard of!).

"What about us?" He looked at her, frowning.

"I hear he turned up at your house this summer."

"Yeah." James kicked at the path. "His family... well, he basically left before they threw him out. You know Sirius."

"Well, you two are so close..." Lily said, giving him another opportunity.

"Yeah. He's like the brother I never had," James agreed, smiling at her. "I'm so glad you understand."

Lily had never been further from understanding. "Brother?" she said, staring at him. "So you're not gay?"

He stared back at her for a moment. "Is that what you've been thinking? All this time?"

Lily shrugged. "He's pretty."

"You're prettier."

Oh God, why did she have to blush now? "That's not the point..."

"No, the point is that you're pretty and you're a girl. A very," he drew her closer, "very important fact, as far as I'm concerned."

She glanced up at him, knowing that she was bright red, knowing that she'd been completely wrong. Strangely enough, this didn't seem to matter very much.

"Prove it," she said.

So he did.

All that remains to be said is that from that afternoon onwards, Lily never questioned James Potter's sexuality ever again. There was no doubt, she reflected that evening, pulling some heather out of her hair, that James was totally, utterly, 100% straight.
