Summary:Seiya knows that her rival is unbeatable, but she will not give up. Written for the "Mamoru" challenge. Manga-based.
The Other Man

She tried, she sincerely did. She made her laugh, she walked with her, she talked with her, she tried to make her feel better. It was so easy. But it wasn't enough. It was never enough. She was never enough.

There was someone else.

Another man. The other man.

Seiya had read books about the Other Woman, the woman in the mirror, the woman in the attic. But she was having a fight with the Other Man. No matter what she did for Usagi, the Other Man had done it better. Usagi didn't have to say anything, it was in her face, it was in the way she spoke his name.

Seiya tried to be patient. She tried to understand. She tried to be everything Mamoru had been. Taiki and Yaten watched her and shook their heads.

"You're wasting your time," Taiki said to her.

Seiya ignored her.

"Did you forget that we already have a princess?" Yaten demanded.

Seiya didn't answer.

"Why are you doing this?" she asked herself in the mirror and her reflection didn't reply. If she pulled her hair back, she almost looked like him.

Then she turn away, angry and confused. She didn't want to be him! She wanted to be herself, she wanted Usagi to love her for herself.

She wanted to yell out and tell Usagi that Mamoru was dead, DEAD. Didn't she remember? She'd been there!

Then why are you sending those cards, making her believe he's alive? Pretending to BE him?

Pretending to be the Other Man. Seiya knew it wasn't healthy. The Other Man brought out all your worst qualities. Forced you to acknowledge them. Even though she never admitted it, the phrase was there, in the back of her mind, unspoken.

I'm glad you're dead.

This was what he did to her. The Other Man. She hated him. He had everything she ever wanted and sooner or later, he would come back and take it. And if she cried out, made any protest (You don't deserve her!), Seiya knew that he could look at her and say, with absolute truth, Neither do you.

But I'm alive and you're not. I'm the winner. You have to stay there in the mirror.

Seiya turned away from the taunting blue eyes. She knew it was only a temporary victory.

When it came to Usagi, Mamoru always won.

DISCLAIMER: I do not own any of these characters. They belong to Naoko Takeuchi.

NOTES: This may seem rather OOC, but I still like it.
