Unspoken Oblivion by Jaded Catalyst

previous  Chapter 9: Dinner for Two  next

Roselyn hated being alone. Her calm and collected demeanor rarely betrayed this dependency, but her soul constantly craved human interaction. She always had a seemingly psychic ability to read other’s thoughts and emotions. This ability would often punish its owner when not put to good use; Roselyn was extremely vulnerable to loneliness and boredom.

This was rarely a problem, except for today. Normally, Jay would be at home when Tony was at work, but Jay was nowhere to be found and Roselyn was left to worry about her.

However, Fortune smiled on Roselyn tonight.

Her cell phone rang and, almost too quickly, Roselyn snatched it from her pocket, hopeful for a familiar voice. She smiled when she saw the name flash on the screen.

 “Hey, Dad.”

“Hey, Kiddo,” came a muffled voice on the other side of the phone. “You missing me over there?”

 “Maybe,” she grinned. “How’s work?”

 “Boring. How’d the game go?”

“Kaelin won ten to nine, as usual.”

Tony chuckled. “Maybe if you were a little taller you’d win once and while.”

“Shut up. Don’t you have work to do?”

“Actually, I was thinking the three of us go out to eat tonight.”

“Make that two. Jay’s,” Roselyn hesitated, “out tonight.” It wasn’t a complete lie, but she had never kept anything from her dad before.

“I see,” Tony mumbled, trying in vain to hide his disappointment. However, he never questioned Jay and always let her live her own way, but that never stopped him from caring. “Well, I guess we might have to go to the store before we eat.”

 “Why?”

“Jay will probably be out all night, right?”

“Probably,” Roselyn replied slowly, still trying to figure out what he was thinking.

“Then we’re going to need an alarm clock.”
