Unspoken Oblivion by Jaded Catalyst

previous  Chapter 26: A Privilege to Breathe  next

The battle was over but the war had yet to truly begin. The barren land was littered with the corpses of over two dozen Cardin, more than half of which met their end by Jay’s hands. Although the three girls each had one kill under their belts and Broderick was just as capable a warrior as Jay, she had been more reckless today than ever before. Broderick was unsure whether this vigor was due to her protective nature or the bloodlust of the emerging warrior inside her. He hoped for the best but feared the worst.

“Are you alright?” ask Roselyn after noticing the growing red patch over a wound on Jay’s side.

The grey-eyed warrior turned her head and looked Roselyn in the eye. “Nothing that can’t be dealt with later,” she said sharply. “We have to get out of here right now.”

Broderick raised his eyebrow in confusion. “What’s going-“

/More Cardin are headed this way and none of you are in any condition to fight again. Get out of here!/

He stared at Jay in shock. Was it just a coincidence or had she really known of the Cardin’s approach before the wind had warned them? “How did you-”

/Something’s wrong. It looks like Gwydion is assembling the whole horde. Slowly but surely they are gathering. In a few weeks he could have an army that’s almost 50,000 strong./

“What?” Jay and Broderick said simultaneously.

The three young girls looked at their older companions in confusion. “Who are guys talking to?” Kaelin said impatiently.

/There is no time. Move!/

 “Where should we go?”

/Anywhere but here./

“Who are you talking to, Broderick?”

“Elzia,” Jay said, ignoring the girls’ questions. “An entrance is near here and we can request reinforcements.”

“Would they be willing to help?”

“What are you two talking about?”

“It’s worth a shot, Broderick. We have no choice. Let’s get out of here.”

“What the hell is going on?” Kaelin shouted, releasing her frustration at being ignored. This time, she got an answer.

“We’re going to a world named Elzia to ask them for help,” Broderick explained.

 “Another world?”

Jay stepped in, wincing slightly from her wound. “We don’t have time to explain; more Cardin are headed this way. Breathing is a privilege and one that we’ll lose if we stay here any longer.”

The girls looked at Jay’s wound grimly. Throughout the battle, Jay had seemed invincible. They had forgotten that she could get hurt or bleed just as they could. They had forgotten that she was human.

The wound was still bleeding and yet Jay showed no signs of stopping. She was right; there were things that could be dealt with later. “Alright, Jay. Lead the way.”

“Can you run?” Broderick asked with concern.

“Faster than I can walk. Let’s go.” She took off with Broderick close behind.

After a moment of thought, Azura, who had been completely silent since the battle, ran after them. Not wanting to be left behind, Kaelin and Roselyn also ran forward but they stayed side-by-side.

“This is really getting on my nerves, “Kaelin sighed.

“They’re just trying to keep us alive,” Roselyn replied, easily matching pace with her friend.

“It scares me that our lives are something we actually have to struggle to keep.”

“It’s just something we have to get use to, I guess.”

Kaelin sighed again, trying to imagine what lay ahead. “Yeah. Did you hear what I said to Azura earlier?”

“Yes.”

“Well, Hell’s starting to sound real good right about now.”
