Chapter 13: “A single black tear”

"Trinity!" exclaimed a voice as soon as I stepped into the room.

The voice came from Yonza. The little Kreon girl rushed towards me and gave me a hug.

"Oh, I'm so glad to see you! How did you—what are they doing here?" she asked in rapid Krel.

The others were standing behind me, looking at Yonza in extreme confusion, for, not only did they not understand her but also because she was a Kreon, the very being we were trying to escape from.

"Yonza, we need your help," I said in fluent Krel.

I heard the others gasp loudly. I was quite surprised myself for it came so easily, I didn't even have to think. It was like I knew Krel from birth.

The only ones who weren't surprised were Alex and Yonza.

"We need to find a way out of here," I told Yonza.

"Why? Please don't leave me, Trinity," she said, pouting.

I smiled sadly. Even if Yonza was a Kreon, she was a little girl, and she was also very lonely. I heard that she didn't have any friends because everyone knew she was fond of humans.

"Yonza, you have to understand, I can't stay here forever."

"Why not?"

I hesitated. How do you tell a six year old child that her father wants to kill you?

"It's-I-I want to-"

I stopped, I had no idea what to say.

"Tell her that you need to see your family," helped Alex.

I was surprised that Alex knew what Yonza and I were talking about, but there was no time for questions.

"Yonza, I have to see my family," I said slowly.

Yonza's face dawned into comprehension as she nodded and led me to the previous hallway full of doors and opened one of them. It opened to the darkened room I had abandoned earlier. She said something in Krel and the lights turned on.

We were in a long room illuminated by green lights. The room consisted of many cylinders lined along the walls containing...what exactly were they containing?

I walked up to one of them. It had a human baby in it, curled in the fetal position, and attached to many tubes. I looked closely at it, placing my hand on the cool glass. Suddenly, the baby's eyes opened and I was stunned in horror. They were black, completely black. The baby had an evil grin on it's white face and swam towards me, reaching out with a small, deformed hand.

Alex grabbed my waist and pulled me away from the cylinder. My hand was momentarily stuck to the glass, but it soon unstuck as Alex pulled with all his might.

I was still shocked and stared speechlessly at the baby, which had returned to its normal position.

Alex held my shoulders and shook me lightly.

"Trinity! Talk to me! Are you okay?"

"I-I-I'm okay. W-what was that?" I stammered, pointing a shaky finger at the baby.

"I don't know, but thank God," he said, taking my face in his hands, "I thought it did something to you."

I was touched. Alex sure cared for me a lot.

He let go of me and walked over to the others on the far end of the room. I went over to join them, noticing the other objects in the room along my way.

There were more babies, all of them human. Some were half Kreons, with huge bulging heads and long fingers. Some were deformed, while others looked normal, but who knows what they'll do when one gets close to them? My overactive imagination imagined all of them looking at me, and it gave me goose bumps.

On another side of the room were grown humans suspended in fluid, and with tubes coming out of their mouths. Unfortunately, these had their eyes open, which were the same black colour, and stared blankly into space. But, I felt them following me down the length of the room.

I felt shivers running down my spine. Hair was standing up on my neck and arms. I felt like throwing up and my head was slightly spinning.

Dazed, I went over to Yonza who was standing before a wall.

The others were more badly shaken. Haley held herself, shivering in fright. Wanda kept her eyes slammed shut, all the while muttering to herself. Leon stared in horror at one of the cylinders and could not take his eyes off it. Natoe was frowning at the ground, his hands shaking.

Alex was the only person who looked indifferent and acted like he'd seen much worse.

Yonza touched the wall, and a door materialized into view. She looked at me with sadness in her eyes.

"The back door," she said, pointing, "leads outside where there is a garage with hoverbikes in them. I can't help you anymore; you're on your own."

I suddenly heard angry voices near the room. Someone was banging on the door.

"Hurry!" shouted Yonza, "They'll find you! GO!"

The others ran out of the door while Alex waited for me as I said goodbye to Yonza.

It was amazing how a little girl knew so much, and acted as if she was my age. I hugged and thanked her and turned to leave.

Yonza looked very sad, her body a deep shade of blue and her eyes glossy, as if tears would fall any minute, even though I wondered if Kreons cried or not.

As I took one last glance at the little Kreon girl, I distinctly saw a black tear rolling down her blue cheek. So Kreons cried after all.
