Sailor Cosmos had watched as her friends fell, her family, her love, her life. She felt her heart swell and explode in her chest as the destruction caused by Chaos’ cloud over took her beautiful Crystal Tokyo, destroying everything that she held dear, everything that she had worked so hard to create. Annihilating her world before her eyes: saving her for last, making her witness his power. She fell to her knees in a defeated silence, just staring at her desolate surroundings, the shock of it all too much for her to bear.

It was just like the first time, when Galaxia had taken them, when she killed them right in front of her eyes; stole their star seeds, made them scream in agony. Sailor Mars had called her a cry baby then, had asked the Stars to protect her beloved princess. Now Eternal Sailor Mars was lying on the ground, silent, eyes closed. She couldn’t see what Sailor Cosmos could see, what was ripping her heart out of her so painfully. She couldn’t see her fellow soldiers laying on the ground next to her, laying where they had fallen protecting their queen, their leader, their friend. She couldn’t see Endymion lying on the ground, clutching a lifeless Neo-Sailor Moon in his arms; her pink hair covering the ground around them. And she wouldn’t see Sailor Cosmos fall, she wouldn’t see her Serenity, her Usagi--the woman that had once been a girl full of light and love--give up hope, give up everything that she believed in.

“He’s going to win!” Sailor Cosmos screamed at her lifeless friends. “He’s going to win and you just left me!” Her voice cracked and she pounded her fists into the ground. Her scepter lay next to her kneeling form, broken in half; a symbol of her dream, her wish, her shattered spirit, scattered around the bodies of her friends and family.

“You left me to die alone.”

Her whisper echoed over the battlefield. It seemed so quiet. Though Chaos raged on in his destruction, all was silent. The tears in her eyes blurred her vision, she could no longer see the dismal sight of her beloved kingdom, she could no longer feel the sun’s rays on her skin, hear the laughter of those she loved, of her child. All that was left was this numb feeling, a feeling of isolation, of loneliness, of ruin.

A sob racked her body and she hugged the ground, burying herself in her defeat, in her sadness. She cried out in pain as her heart continued to beat though the hearts of her friends and family had long since stopped. She squeezed her eyes shut and screamed as loudly as she could, trying to make noise, to make herself wake up.

‘It’s a nightmare,’ she told herself. ‘It has to be a nightmare.’ She sat up and pinched herself in the arm. When the illusion didn’t dissipate she called out to the air.

“Wake me up Usagi! Endymion! Anybody!”

She fell as the sobs overtook her again, toppled over onto her side. Clutching her knees to her chest, she lay on the ground and hugged herself, her eyes closed tightly, trying to wake herself from the nightmare. Trying to return to the time that she had control, friends, family…happiness.

Suddenly, her breath caught in her throat. She released her legs and pushed herself up off the ground. She rubbed her bare hands over her face to wipe away the tears that were lingering on her cheeks. Her eyes darted from place to place, taking in the destruction once again, making herself believe what was before her. Following the path of Chaos’ destruction back and forth over her derelict kingdom.

“I’ll go back.” Her whisper caught her off guard and she looked down at her hands in question. “I’ll go back to when it was OK, back to before Chaos came. Back to Eternal Sailor Moon. I’ll make her do what I couldn’t do. I’ll make her understand that there is no other way.”

Sailor Cosmos lifted herself from her knees, stood on wobbly feet and stared once more at the destroyed kingdom before her.

“I will save you all. I will save this world.”

Closing her eyes and summoning the last of her strength she called upon the power of the cosmos, the power of time, the power of her lost friends. The ground broke beneath her and she was slowly lifted from the rocky surface of the sad battlefield by an invisible force. Taking one last look at her soldiers, her love, and her daughter, wishing with all her heart to stare into their vibrant eyes once more, she whispered, “I love you. I will return.” Then she was overcome by a white light and she left the destruction of the future for a past that she hoped to change.
