Unspoken Oblivion by Jaded Catalyst

“Nine all. Next shot wins,” Roselyn said, tying back her long black hair. Fixing her amber eyes on her opponent, she tossed the basketball to her. “Your ball, Kaelin.”

“Thanks, but I’d duck if I were you,” Kaelin said rather calmly.

Roselyn quickly sidestepped as a blurry figure rushed by. It turned out to be another one of their companions: an energetic blonde, pouting in exaggerated annoyance at Kaelin. “You’re no fun!”

“I know,” smirked Kaelin.

Roselyn grinned at the newcomer. “Hi, Azura. We’re just finishing up.”

“You guys started without me?”

“Do you even like basketball?”

“No!”

An awkward silence.

“We’re almost done anyway. Give us a few minutes.”

“I only need thirty seconds to deal with you, Roselyn.”

“Oh yeah? Well-“

“Hold on!” Azura held out her hands. “Before you two return to killing each other, where’s Jay?”

“She’s picking up her car from the mechanic’s right now. She’ll meet up with us in a bit.”

“Does that mean she can drive us around again? I call shotgun!”

“Shotgun? No, you get the trunk.” Kaelin chuckled as she rolled her shoulders and cracked her neck.

“Have we ever told you how gross that was?”

“Yes you have. Now can we finish this?”

“What are you guys playing to?”

This time, Roselyn spoke up after suppressing her amusement at her friends’ antics. “The usual: first to ten.”

“Awesome.” Azura made a face at Kaelin and walked off to her spot beyond the sidelines. “I hope you lose, you big meany.”

“Never going to happen.” Her sea green eyes met Roselyn’s intense gaze.

A moment of tension before Kaelin feigned left and spun off to the right. However, Roselyn had anticipated the move and easily kept up.

“You’re so predictable.”

“Less talking, more blocking.”

“LAME!” shouted the blonde from the side.

The two chose to disregard her, placing all their focus on the game. Kaelin slowly pressed towards the hoop, but Roselyn effortlessly kept pace with graceful agility. Nevertheless, Kaelin got the opportunity she was looking for. Feeling that she was close enough to the net, she strafed to the side and used her slight height advantage to shoot the ball into a perfect arc, letting it slip smoothly through the basket.

“Game.”
