Unspoken Oblivion by Jaded Catalyst

previous  Chapter 7: A Truth in Every Word  next

It was a quiet night. Raindrops gently slid down the broken glass window, only adding to the shattered image of a false world. Broderick heaved a great sigh and leaned back on battered sofa. An extension to the back of the car garage served as his home, and it was little more than a shabby cardboard box in comparison to the grand palace he resided in the life before.

Still, he liked it. It was quiet and, despite its appearance, cozy. He enjoyed the serenity and only wished it were true. However, he knew better than that.

In times like this, true peace has to be fought for. Our current peace, one so easily gained, could not last. The Children of Serenity have forgotten the sacrifices made for this world to simply exist. It is only a mask of the true chaos of this world. I have waited for the day that this lie will be uncovered, and the true world will emerge. The Illusion, although the depiction of an ideal world, has no basis to be such.

Our warriors are assembled, but they are not what they once were. They, like all the rest, have forgotten the true plight of Gaia. However, that will soon change.

I have monitored this false world closely, and there is no doubt that the end is near. Our warriors will once again take up arms to fight for a true peace that can actually be kept and cherished.

My most powerful ally in this war will also be my greatest obstacle. She is undoubtedly the best friend one could ask for and the worst enemy one could imagine. The same person who can lead us to glory can also lead us to destruction.

But…

Broderick’s statement was scribbled almost illegibly in his notebook, and he would have very likely thrown it across the room ad it not been so valuable. Instead, he had to settle with listening to the sound of the rain while idly twirling his pen.

Every circumstance of this situation frustrated him, especially the most recent one to turn up. Jay had been so close all along, and yet Broderick hadn’t found her until now. Had he honestly search for her to the best of his abilities or was part of him holding him back?

Heaving another long sigh, he looked down at the small, worn book on his lap. He ran a calloused finger over the battered cover and ruffled pages marveling at how long it lasted. It was his crutch, his only solid evidence that everything happening to him was real. Whenever he questioned himself, this one book was his anchor to sanity.

He carefully opening it to the page he was writing on only seconds before and stared at his last statement. It settled his wavering resolve; he knew there was truth behind all that he wrote.

His thoughts were cut short by a sudden knock on the door. Wondering who could wander to the back door of a mechanic’s shop in the middle of a rainy night, he approached the door with a dull caution. However, his heart seemed to all ready know what his eyes did not yet see. Broderick opened the door, and standing in the downpour was Jay.

A long silence stretched between them, but Broderick didn’t notice, for all he could hear was the echoing in his mind: the four words that defined his existence and preserved themselves in his time-weary book.

But…I have faith.
