Unspoken Oblivion by Jaded Catalyst

previous  Chapter 14: Rock-Steady Resolve  next

It was six in the morning at the beginning of August, and most high school students would be enjoying the morning by sleeping until noon.

But today would prove to be a very unusual day.

Kaelin, who had been sleeping soundly on the floor of Azura’s room, was rudely awakened by the ringing of her cell phone. She stole a weary glance at the name on the screen and answered, “Only someone like you would call someone else at six in the morning.”

“You’re usually awake, too. Why are you so tired today?”

“I’m at Azura’s again. She wears me out.”

 “True.”

“So what’s up?” It never took long for Kaelin’s brain to start working in the mornings; she already sounded awake and ready to start the day. On a normal morning, Roselyn would be calling Kaelin with a sickeningly cheerful morning voice to ask for a jog that Kaelin almost never participated in.

However, Roselyn’s voice was far from chipper. “Jay’s not home.”

“Did she stop by at all?”

“It looks like it. She took her jacket and list of deliveries but her bed looks untouched. She probably stopped by about an hour ago and took off again.”

“It looks like we need to do some investigating.”

Roselyn’s voice betrayed her concern. “Are you sure? I don’t want to be sticking my nose where it doesn’t belong.”

“Same, but this isn’t just affecting her. If it’s big enough to faze someone like Jay, then it affects all of us.” Kaelin’s seemingly rock-steady resolve served its purpose.

 “You’re right.”

 “Then we investigate.”

There was a long, expectant pause.

A dull thump followed by a muffled cry broke the silence.

 “Say your line,” commanded Kaelin.

Azura rose, drowsily rubbing her head. “Did you have to kick me?”

“Yes I did. Say the secret agent thing.”

Suddenly, Azura sprang to her feet and said, “I smell a secret agent mission!”

Switching her attention back to the phone, Kaelin heard Roselyn laughing. A feeling of success filled her, knowing that she had cheered Roselyn up a bit. “So where are we starting, Roselyn?”

“Let’s start at the mechanic’s. That’s where she was before lunch yesterday.”

“Sounds good,” Kaelin responding, still sounding very sure of herself. “See you soon.”

She hung up and glanced over to Azura, who was looking at her with hopeful eyes. “What are we doing?”

“Simply put, we’re going to figure out what’s bugging Jay, but honestly, I have no idea what the hell we’re doing.”
